The short answer

Running pace is time divided by distance: a 12:00 2.4km is 720 seconds over 2.4km, or 5:00 per km.

  • Speed in km/h is 60 divided by the pace in minutes, so 5:00 per km is 12.0 km/h.
  • A 400m lap takes 0.4 of the pace per km, 2:00 here, and a 2.4km is six laps.
  • A sub-10 2.4km needs faster than 4:10 per km, 1:40 a lap or 14.4 km/h.

Key facts

  • Pace per km = time divided by distance in km. Speed in km/h = distance divided by time in hours
  • A 400m lap takes 0.4 of your pace per km, and a 2.4km is 6 laps of a 400m track
  • A 12:00 2.4km is 5:00 per km, 2:00 a lap and 12.0 km/h
  • A 10:00 2.4km is 4:10 per km, 1:40 a lap and 14.4 km/h

What is your running pace per km?

Your time divided by your distance in km. A 12:00 2.4km is 720 seconds divided by 2.4, which is 300 seconds, or 5:00 per km. Choose what you want to work out below: your pace from a time, your finish time from a pace, or the 2.4km time and laps for a number of IPPT run points.

12:00 for 2.4 km is 5:00 per km. On a treadmill that shows km/h, set 12.0.

Pace is time divided by distance, and a 400m lap is 0.4 of the pace per km. Figures are rounded to a tenth of a second and a tenth of a km/h.

The calculator assumes an even pace over a measured distance, so treat it as an estimate. It is not medical advice. IPPT times come from MINDEF's 2.4km score table for servicemen, as built into the NS Portal's IPPT calculator, checked 4 November 2026. The half marathon is 21.0975km and the marathon 42.195km, per World Athletics (half marathon, marathon, checked 7 November 2026).

How do you work out running pace by hand?

Turn the time into seconds, divide by the distance in km, then turn the answer back into minutes and seconds. That is your pace per km. Three more numbers follow from it.

  1. 01Pace per kmTime in seconds divided by km. 12:00 for 2.4km is 720 divided by 2.4, which is 300 seconds, or 5:00.
  2. 02Speed in km/h3,600 divided by the pace in seconds. 3,600 divided by 300 is 12.0 km/h, the number to key in on a treadmill that shows km/h.
  3. 03400m lap splitThe pace per km times 0.4. 300 times 0.4 is 120 seconds, or 2:00 a lap.
  4. 04Finish timeThe pace per km times the distance. 5:00 per km for 5km is 300 times 5, which is 25:00.

What pace is each 2.4km time?

Each row below is worked out from the 2.4km time in the first column, in 30-second steps from 8:30 to 16:00. A 2.4km is six 400m laps, so the lap split is the time divided by 6. Find your current time or your target and read across. Under 22, 8:30 is full marks on MINDEF's table and 16:00 is the last time that scores a point (1).

2.4km time to pace per km, 400m lap split and speed, worked out by Fit Titans (time divided by 2.4km, by 6 laps, and 8,640 divided by the time in seconds). Checked 7 November 2026

What pace do you need for a sub-10 2.4km?

Faster than 4:10 per km, which is 1:40 a lap on a 400m track and 14.4 km/h. A 10:00 run is 600 seconds over six laps, so the laps have to average under 100 seconds. The clock should read under 1:40, 3:20, 5:00 at the ends of laps 1, 2 and 3.

For IPPT, a time counts at or under each 10-second row, so 9:59 scores the same as 10:00: 41 points under 22 and 49 at 40 to 42. Under 22 the next point needs 9:50 (42 points). Every time for all 14 age groups is in the IPPT 2.4km points table.

What 2.4km time and pace does each IPPT score need?

It depends on your age group. Under 22, 43 run points, the run's share of a balanced 85 for Gold, needs 9:40 or faster: 1:36.6 a lap or 4:01.6 per km. At 40 to 42 the same 43 points needs 11:00, or 1:50 a lap.

The columns are the run's share of each balanced route on IPPT score by age, where push-ups and sit-ups score equal points and the rest comes from the run.

Your total also needs push-up and sit-up points, and at least 1 point at every station for any award. The IPPT calculator adds all three stations for your age group.

How do you pace the 6 laps of a 2.4km evenly?

Divide your target by 6 and check the clock at the end of every lap. For a 12:00 the laps are 2:00 each, so the clock reads 2:00, 4:00, 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 12:00. For a 9:40 it reads 1:36.6, 3:13.3, 4:50, 6:26.6, 8:03.3, 9:40. The IPPT mode of the calculator shows these splits for any age group and run score.

Our coaches set test-day pacing the same way in the 2.4km training plan: the first lap at goal pace or a second slower, even laps after that, and anything left saved for the last 400m. That is our coaching approach, not an official rule. On a route that is not a track, use the pace per km at each km marker instead.

How do you use your pace in training?

Work out your pace from a recent timed run, then your target pace from the time you want. The gap between the two tells you what the training has to close. The 2.4km run training plan turns a target time into a pace for every session over eight weeks, with a check run in week 4 to reset the target.

If the run is for IPPT, look up what your target earns in the IPPT 2.4km points table before you choose it. If you cannot run 2.4km without stopping yet, the training plan starts with a run-walk lead-in.

Anyone with a heart or lung condition, high blood pressure or a recent illness or injury should see a doctor before a timed run, as our IPPT and NAPFA coaching page sets out.

Pace calculator questions.

How do you calculate running pace per km?

Divide your time in seconds by the distance in km, then turn the answer back into minutes and seconds. A 25:00 5km is 1,500 seconds divided by 5, which is 300 seconds, or 5:00 per km.

What pace is a 12-minute 2.4km?

5:00 per km, 2:00 for each of the six 400m laps, and 12.0 km/h. On MINDEF's IPPT table, 12:00 earns 33 run points under 22 and 38 at 40 to 42.

How many laps is a 2.4km run?

Six laps of a 400m track, since 2,400 divided by 400 is 6. The 1.6km run-walk in primary-school NAPFA is four laps.

What speed should I set on a treadmill for my 2.4km target?

The speed in km/h from the calculator, which is 8,640 divided by your 2.4km time in seconds, or 3,600 divided by your pace in seconds per km. A 12:00 target is 12.0 km/h and a 10:00 target is 14.4 km/h. In IPPT mode the calculator rounds the speed up, so the belt is never slower than the target.

What 2.4km time do I need for IPPT Gold?

Gold is a total of 85 points, so it depends on your push-ups and sit-ups as well. On a balanced route of 21 points each on push-ups and sit-ups, the run needs 43 points: 9:40 under 22 and 11:00 at 40 to 42. That is 1:36.6 and 1:50 a lap.

Is a sub-10 2.4km fast?

It needs 4:10 per km or faster for the whole run, about 14.4 km/h. On MINDEF's IPPT table, 10:00 earns 41 of the run's 50 points under 22 and 49 at 40 to 42, so it counts for more as you get older.
