The short answer
NAPFA grades six stations A to E for 5 to 1 points, 30 at most.
- Gold needs at least a C at every station and 21 points, Silver a D and 15, Bronze an E and 6.
- For a boy of 16, a C needs 37 sit-ups, 226cm in the broad jump and a 2.4km in 12:20 or faster.
- For a girl of 16 it is 26 sit-ups, 169cm and 16:00.

Key facts
- Six stations, each graded A to E for 5 to 1 points, 30 at most. Worse than an E is an F, 0 points
- Gold: at least a C at all six and 21 points. Silver: a D and 15. Bronze: an E and 6
- Primary pupils run 1.6km. Secondary and pre-university students run 2.4km
- Girls and boys up to 14 do inclined pull-ups. Boys from 15 do pull-ups
What NAPFA grade and award will you get?
Each station is graded A to E on your own age and sex row, worth 5 points down to 1, and the award depends on both the total and your lowest grade. Pick your school level and age, enter your six results, and the calculator gives the grade at each station, how far each is from the next grade, your total out of 30 and your award.

Secondary, age 16, boy, total
20 of 30
Silver. Gold needs at least a C at every station and 21 points. The total is 1 point short.
Grades from MOE's NAPFA standards tables as schools publish them, checked 7 November 2026. A result worse than an E is an F, 0 points. This is an estimate, not an official result or medical advice. Your PE teacher records the official grades.
The grades come from MOE's NAPFA standards tables: the secondary table as Dunman Secondary School publishes it, for ages 12 to 24, and the primary tables St. Hilda's Primary School publishes, for ages 9 to 13, both checked 7 November 2026.
The example above, a boy of 16 with 38 sit-ups, a 230cm jump, a 41cm reach, 6 pull-ups, a 10.3 second shuttle run and an 11:20 run, scores 20 points and Silver, 1 point short of Gold.
What do you need for NAPFA Gold, Silver and Bronze?
Gold needs at least a C at all six stations and 21 points or more. Silver needs at least a D everywhere and 15 points, and Bronze at least an E everywhere and 6 points. Those are the award requirements printed in the MOE secondary table and on St. Hilda's awards slide, checked 7 November 2026.
| Award | Lowest grade allowed at any station | Total points needed |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | C | 21 or more |
| Silver | D | 15 or more |
| Bronze | E | 6 or more |
Both rules apply at once. Six C grades make only 18 points, which is Silver, so Gold also needs 3 spare points, such as three B grades. Five A grades and one D make 27 points but only Silver, because the D breaks the C floor. Fix the weakest station first.
How is the NAPFA test scored?
Each of the six results is read against your age and sex row and graded A for 5 points down to E for 1. A result worse than the E band is an F, worth 0, and an F rules out every award. The most anyone can score is 30. Which pull-up you do and how far you run depend on your age, sex and school level.
| Station | Measured as | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| Sit-ups | Reps in 1 minute | Everyone |
| Standing broad jump | Distance in cm | Everyone |
| Sit and reach | Reach in cm | Everyone |
| Inclined pull-ups | Reps in 30 seconds | Every girl, and boys up to 14 |
| Pull-ups | Reps in 30 seconds | Boys from 15 |
| 4 x 10m shuttle run | Time in seconds, to 0.1 | Everyone |
| Run-walk | Time in min:sec | 1.6km at primary, 2.4km at secondary and pre-university |
Ages 12 and 13 have two rows. A Primary 6 pupil is graded on the primary table with the 1.6km, and a secondary student on the secondary table with the 2.4km. The five field stations have the same bands on both tables.
Some pre-university boys who are enlisting into NS take push-ups in place of pull-ups. This calculator does not grade that station, and NAPFA pull-ups and sit-ups explains the change.
What are the NAPFA standards for primary school?
For a boy of 12 on the primary table, a C needs 32 sit-ups, 16 inclined pull-ups and a 1.6km in 10:40 or faster. For a girl of 12 it is 21 sit-ups, 10 inclined pull-ups and 12:00. Pick your child's row below.
Primary 4 pupils are usually on the 9 to 11 rows and Primary 6 pupils on the 11 to 13 rows. A Primary 5 pupil is tested next in Primary 6, so read the row for the age they will be then. The parent's guide, with a six-week plan, is NAPFA test for primary school.

What are the NAPFA standards for secondary school and pre-U?
For a boy of 16, a C needs 37 sit-ups, 5 pull-ups, a 10.5 second shuttle run and a 2.4km in 12:20 or faster. For a girl of 16 it is 26 sit-ups, 11 inclined pull-ups, 11.8 seconds and 16:00.
Pick your row below. Boys from 15 do full pull-ups, and the table's last rows cover ages 20 to 24. A second copy of the same MOE table, on an MOE school's PE site, matches it for ages 12 to 19.

Every band starts one rep, centimetre, tenth or second after the band below it ends, so these five cut-offs are the whole table. The printed ranges for each station, with technique and training, are on the station pages: sit and reach, standing broad jump, shuttle run and pull-ups and sit-ups. The 2.4km grades for ages 12 to 18 are also in the 2.4km run guide.
Which NAPFA station should you train first?
Any station below the floor of the award you want, because no total makes up for it. After that, the station closest to its next grade in the calculator.
A gap of a few centimetres in the sit and reach or a few tenths in the shuttle run usually closes sooner than a gap in pull-ups or the run. Change one result at a time in the calculator to see which gain lifts the award. The six stations and an eight-week block are in the NAPFA test guide.

NAPFA calculator questions.
How many points do you need for NAPFA Gold?
21 or more out of 30, with at least a C at all six stations. Six C grades make only 18, so Gold also needs 3 spare points from B or A grades. Silver needs 15 points with no grade below D, and Bronze 6 points with no grade below E.
Can you get NAPFA Gold with a D in one station?
No. Gold needs a C or better at every station, whatever the total. Five A grades and one D make 27 points, which is Silver, not Gold. Lift the D to a C and the same student has Gold.
What happens if you get an F in one NAPFA station?
An F is a result worse than the E band, worth 0 points. Every award needs at least an E at all six stations, so one F means no award, whatever the other five score. The calculator shows how far an F is from an E.
Why are there two rows for ages 12 and 13?
Because the run changes with school level. A Primary 6 pupil of 12 or 13 is graded on the primary table with the 1.6km run-walk, and a secondary student of the same age on the secondary table with the 2.4km. The other five stations have the same bands on both tables.
Do girls do pull-ups in NAPFA?
No. Girls do inclined pull-ups at every age, with the feet on the ground under a low bar, counted in 30 seconds. Boys do inclined pull-ups up to 14 and full pull-ups from 15.
Which age row should I use?
The age you will be on the test day, on the table for your school level. Schools can work out age differently, so your PE teacher can confirm the row. One year off can change the cut-offs.
Is the calculator result my official NAPFA result?
No. It is an estimate from MOE's tables as schools publish them, checked 7 November 2026. Your PE teacher records the official grades, and if your school hands out a different sheet, train to that one.
