What does the standing broad jump test?
MOE's NAPFA item list describes the standing broad jump as the test of lower body muscular power. You stand with both feet behind the line, jump forward from both feet at once, land on both feet, and the distance is measured from the line to the nearest point of contact, usually the rear heel. Stepping, hopping or falling back onto a hand shortens or voids the attempt.
Power is strength expressed quickly, so a strong student with slow technique often jumps shorter than a lighter one who has drilled it. The good news is that the technique part is learnable in a couple of sessions. The rest of the six-station picture is in the NAPFA test guide.
What is the correct technique?
- Set-up: feet hip-width, toes just behind the line, weight on the balls of the feet.
- Arm swing: swing the arms forward and up, then back past the hips as you sink into a quarter squat; this loads the hips like a spring.
- Drive: as the arms come forward again, push hard through both feet and extend the hips, knees and ankles together.
- Angle: aim to leave the ground at roughly 45 degrees; too flat and you skid along the mat, too high and you land under yourself.
- Flight: bring the knees up and the arms forward, then shoot the feet ahead of you just before landing.
- Landing: land on both feet with the heels forward, absorb into a squat, and let the arms come through so you do not fall back.
The single biggest gain for most students is the timing between the arm swing and the leg drive. Practise it without jumping first: swing back as you sink, swing forward as you stand, until the two arrive together. Then add the jump.
Two smaller cues help. Breathe in on the back swing and drive out hard on the exhale, which stops students holding their breath and stiffening through the trunk. And look at a spot on the far wall slightly above eye level rather than at the mat; where the eyes go the chest follows, and a chest that lifts on take-off sets the 45-degree angle without you having to think about it. What faults cost the most distance?

How do you build jumping power safely?
Twice a week for 4-6 weeks: a few sets of low-volume jumps done fresh at the start of the session, followed by leg strength. Plyometrics are safe for teens when the volume is small, the landings are taught first and the surface is forgiving, so start on grass or a mat, not the void deck concrete. Keep total ground contacts under about 40 per session.
A sensible order is landing drills first, then jumps in place, then jumps for distance, then multi-jumps. Strength work underneath it is simple: goblet squats, split squats, glute bridges and calf raises, two or three sets each, progressed slowly. A condo gym with dumbbells is enough; the living room works with a backpack of books.
- Weeks 1-2: drop-and-stick landings from a low step, pogo hops, squat jumps for height; goblet squats and bridges.
- Weeks 3-4: broad jumps at 80 percent effort with full landing, 3 sets of 3; add split squats and calf raises.
- Weeks 5-6: maximal broad jumps, 3 sets of 3, measured; two or three consecutive broad jumps for rhythm; strength maintained.
- Final week: technique only, a handful of measured jumps two days before the test, then rest.
Where to do it: a grass patch at the estate, a school field on a weekend, or a condo lawn all beat concrete for the jump work, and a tape measure on the ground turns any of them into a test station. The strength work fits a condo gym or a living room. Keep the jump sessions on days you are fresh rather than after a 2.4km run, and leave at least 48 hours between them so the tendons recover, because a teenager's knees and heels are still growing and do not tolerate daily jumping.

How should you warm up for the station?
Five minutes of jogging and dynamic movement, then leg swings, walking lunges and bodyweight squats, then three or four jumps building from half effort to near-maximal. Do not take the station cold and do not spend the warm-up on long static stretches, which reduce power for a while afterwards. On a school hall floor make sure your shoes grip; a slip on take-off is a wasted attempt.
Who should take extra care?
Anyone with a recent ankle sprain, knee pain, heel or shin pain, or a growth-related knee complaint such as pain below the kneecap should get cleared by a doctor or physiotherapist before starting jump training, and should keep volume low even after clearance. Stop for sharp pain on landing. Teens grow fast, and a coach who has trained this age group scales the volume to the athlete rather than the programme.
How does a coach train this at home?
A coach films two or three jumps on a phone, shows you the arm timing and the landing, and fixes them in the same session; most students add distance on the spot.
