Can you train consistently on rotating shifts?
Yes, if the plan is built around the roster instead of the calendar. Two sessions a week, spaced at least a day apart, is the target; which two days changes each week and that is fine. The failure mode is a plan that assumes Monday and Thursday for ever, which retail, F&B, nursing, aviation and security rosters break within a fortnight. A mobile coach removes the second failure mode too: nobody is going to Somerset for a gym after a 10-hour shift at Changi.
What time slots actually exist?
Our contact hours run 6am to 10pm every day, and the slots shift workers use are the two ends: 6am to 7am before a morning shift, and 7.30pm to 9.30pm after an afternoon shift or on an off day. Not every coach does both ends, so the match is on availability first. If you mostly need 6am, say so in the first message and we shortlist the coaches near you who are already up at that hour. How often you should see a trainer covers the frequency trade-offs.
Should you train before or after a night shift?
After your main sleep, whenever that falls. For a night worker sleeping 8am to 3pm, the best session is late afternoon or early evening before the next shift; for a morning worker on a 6am start, it is 6am on an off day or straight after the shift at 3pm. What you avoid is a hard session in the four hours before your main sleep, because vigorous exercise close to bedtime makes falling asleep harder. A light walk or mobility work in that window is fine.
Sleep is the variable that decides whether training works at all. Adults need at least seven hours a day, and shift workers are at higher risk of insomnia and disrupted sleep. If you are running on five hours, a session that leaves you flattened does more harm than good, so your coach scales the load to how you slept, not to the plan on paper. Tell them the truth about the night before.
What does a fortnight look like on a rotating roster?
| Shift block | Sleep window | Session slot | What the session is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mornings (6am-3pm) | 10pm-5am | 3.30pm after shift, or 6am on an off day | Full-body strength, 60 min |
| Afternoons (2pm-11pm) | 12.30am-8am | 9am-11am before shift | Full-body strength, 60 min |
| Nights (10pm-7am) | 8am-3pm | 4pm-6pm before shift | Lighter strength or conditioning, load scaled to sleep |
| Off days | Whatever you can get | Late morning | The heavier of the week's two sessions |
| Quick return (night into morning) | Broken | Skip, walk instead | Recovery beats a forced session |
How do you eat around night shifts?
- Regular small meals: every three to four hours through the shift rather than one heavy meal at 2am.
- Protein at each one: a hawker option like chicken rice with extra chicken, fish soup, or yong tau foo with more tofu and egg does the job.
- Light before sleep: a large meal at 7.30am before an 8am sleep sits badly; something small and mostly protein is better.
- Caffeine cut-off: stop kopi and tea at least six hours before your planned sleep, which for an 8am sleep means nothing after 2am.
- Water on the floor: aircon and standing for ten hours dehydrate you quietly; carry a bottle.
If fat loss is the goal, the same rules that apply to everyone apply here, just moved around the clock. Eating at hawker centres for fat loss has the practical choices.

How do you book a coach who does early or late?
Message us with your roster cycle and the two ends of the day you can use, and we match on availability first, then goal. Sessions are booked a week at a time once your roster is out, with 24 hours' notice to move one at no charge if a shift swap lands. Sessions never expire, so a run of overtime does not cost you paid sessions. Home personal training explains how a session runs in your flat or condo gym.
What should you tell us?
- Your rotation: mornings, afternoons, nights, how many days of each, and how far ahead the roster is published.
- Your usable slots: 6am, after 7.30pm, or a mid-morning on off days.
- Where you sleep and train: HDB flat, condo gym or a park near the block, and the nearest MRT.
- Sleep reality: a typical night after each shift type, so the coach can scale load.
- Goal and injuries: the same as any client, and the one part the roster does not change.
