When should you check with a doctor before exercising with prediabetes?
Before you start, and again if anything on this list appears. Prediabetes itself rarely stops anyone training, but it often arrives with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease, and your doctor may want those looked at first. Stop and seek medical attention for chest pain or pressure, unusual breathlessness, dizziness or fainting, or a wound on your foot that is slow to heal. If your doctor has put you on metformin or any other medication, tell your coach, because it changes how we handle food around sessions. This page is general information and not a substitute for your doctor's advice.
How common is prediabetes in Singapore?
Common enough that the government declared a War on Diabetes in 2016. In its 2017 statement MOH estimated about 430,000 Singaporeans aged 18 to 69, or 14%, had pre-diabetes, and said that without intervention around one in three would progress to type 2 diabetes within eight years. The same campaign is why sugar labels appear on drinks, why Screen for Life offers subsidised screening from age 40, and why polyclinics now run structured follow-up for people in this range. HealthHub defines the prediabetes band as a fasting glucose of 6.1-6.9 mmol/L or a two-hour reading of 7.8-11.0 mmol/L; your doctor may also use HbA1c.
What does 150 minutes plus two strength sessions actually do?
It lowers blood glucose through two separate routes. Aerobic activity, 150 minutes a week of the brisk-walking kind, burns glucose during the activity and improves insulin sensitivity for a day or two afterwards. Resistance training builds and maintains muscle, and muscle is where most glucose is stored, so more of it means a bigger reservoir and better sensitivity around the clock. The American Diabetes Association position statement on physical activity recommends both: the aerobic minutes plus two to three resistance sessions a week on non-consecutive days. The large diabetes-prevention trials that informed this used the same recipe alongside modest weight loss, which is where HealthHub's 5-10% target comes from. Individual results vary and nobody can promise your HbA1c will move by a set amount.
Why is the after-meal walk the easiest win?
Because it is short, needs no kit, and hits the moment that matters. Blood glucose peaks in the hour or so after a meal, and walking during that window makes your leg muscles take glucose up while it is high. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough. In Singapore the natural slot is after dinner, when the heat has dropped: a loop of the block, a park connector, or two rounds of the void deck if it is raining. If you only add one habit from this page, add that one. It pairs well with the steps-based approach in losing weight without a gym.
Two practical notes for Singapore. First, the heat: a midday walk in 33 degrees is a different exercise from a 7pm one, so if lunch is your biggest meal, walk inside the office building or a mall link for ten minutes rather than skipping it. Second, the MRT: getting off one stop early on the way home after dinner out is an after-meal walk that costs nothing and needs no decision on the day.
What does a 12-week prediabetes plan look like?
| Weeks | Walking | Strength | Habit to add |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | 10 min after dinner daily | 1 session, bodyweight and bands | Kopi and teh siu dai |
| 3-4 | 15 min after dinner plus one 30 min walk | 2 sessions, add light dumbbells | Half the rice or noodles at lunch |
| 5-8 | Total 150 min a week, mostly after meals | 2 sessions, progressive load | Protein first at every meal |
| 9-12 | 150-200 min, one longer weekend walk | 2-3 sessions, full patterns | Re-check HbA1c with your doctor |
Strength sessions at home need very little: a set of bands, a pair of adjustable dumbbells or a condo gym with a rack. The movements are the same five patterns we teach every beginner, covered in starting with a trainer. Most clients in this range do best with two coached sessions a week and walk on their own.
Progress in this plan is measured by two things you control: whether the walking minutes and strength sessions happened, and whether the weights went up. Blood glucose and HbA1c are measured by your doctor, on the schedule your doctor sets, and a coach never reads or interprets those results. If a reading comes back higher rather than lower at the 12-week check, that is information for your doctor, not a reason to train harder on your own.

How much does kopi and teh sugar matter?
- Standard kopi or teh: comes with sugar and condensed or evaporated milk by default; two or three a day adds up to a meaningful daily sugar load.
- Siu dai: less sugar. The easiest first step and nobody at the stall blinks.
- Kosong: no sugar. Where most people land within a few weeks once the taste adjusts.
- Kopi O or teh O kosong: black, no sugar. The lowest option and still a proper kopi.
- Packet and canned drinks: check the Nutri-Grade label; A and B are the ones to reach for.
Drinks are the quiet half of the prediabetes problem in Singapore because they never feel like a meal. The rest of the food side is portion control on rice and noodles and putting protein first; the hawker guide covers it dish by dish.
How does a coach help with prediabetes?
Mostly by making the two strength sessions actually happen and by keeping the load appropriate. We come to your home, condo gym or a nearby park, we ask for your latest readings and what your doctor has said, and we build the plan around that. Typical 1-to-1 sessions are S$80-S$130 and the first consult is free. We do not interpret blood results, adjust medication or promise a number; your doctor does the first two and nobody can honestly do the third. See weight-loss coaching for how the nutrition side is handled.
